Dwarf Cape Gooseberry, also known as Physalis pruinosa, is a small round fruit that is light orange in color and has a sweet acidic taste. The fruit is encased in a papery husk that looks very attractive. It is also known as the 'ground berry'. This compact version of Cape Gooseberry does best when grown in a greenhouse in soil or containers. It can be grown outside in a very sheltered sunny spot but it does need good high temperatures. Dwarf Cape Gooseberry can be used raw in fruit salads, cooked in desserts, jams or part-dipped in chocolate as an appealing eatable garnish. The plant grows up to 90cm in height and produces shiny, orange fruit encased in attractive husks. It is particularly well suited to growing in containers. The seeds can be sown from February to April and the fruits can be harvested from July to September.
